Foul smell following a chemical leak in France

Our Emergency Operations Centres (EOCs) have received a small number of calls from people worried about a foul smelling odour in Berkshire and Hampshire. Other emergency services in Kent and Sussex have also had similar calls.

The smell is being blamed on a spill of the chemical Mercaptan at a factory in Rouen in north-western France.

Mercaptan is used to give odourless natural gas its distinctive smell and is non-toxic and harmless.

The HPA (Health Protection Agency) have today said that

".....people should be reassured it will cause no harm. It is an unpleasant odour which may cause some people to feel slightly nauseous but it will dispel naturally."

People are being urged not to call us if they smell the gas from this incident.
